Sustainable Tourism Award 2020
In 2020 we were delighted and honored to be presented with the annual Sustainable Tourism Award sponsored by Parks Canada at the Hospitality Newfoundland and Labrador Conference in Corner Brook.
We are a small, independent coffee shop and restaurant overlooking Robin Hood Bay in the small township of Port Rexton on the Bonavista Peninsula. According to many of our customers we serve the best espresso coffees on the island – we feel it is a combination of great beans (from Jumping Bean in St John’s), our espresso machine, skill, our well water and a bit of Two Whales magic! We serve a range of premium teas and soft drinks including our special homemade organic lemonade. Part of our philosophy is that we do not serve anything that we will not eat or drink ourselves.
We serve delicious, healthy vegetarian and vegan food and yummy cakes which you can find out about under the food menu. Over the years numerous customers have asked us whether they can have one of our soup or cake recipes so we have published a number of recipes that can be downloaded from the cookbook page. Our Two Whales Cookbook: Vegetarian Recipes and Tales from a Newfoundland Outport contains many of the recipes we use at the coffee shop as well as stories of resettling in a Newfoundland outport. See the cookbook page for details.
We use as much organic and/or locally sourced ingredients as we can, make and bake just about everything ourselves in our own kitchen and take great care in what we do. We are a happy band of fourteen operating Two Whales during the summer season. Read our mission statement to learn more about the principles that guide our small business.
We grow a wide variety of organic salads, vegetables, herbs and flowers in our own greenhouse in Trinity East, riddle-fenced garden at the Coffee shop and poly tunnel greenhouse overlooking the shop. We are also beginning our sixth year as beekeepers.
Finally, we offer our wall space for one artist (or group of artists) each month to curate a show of their work – see art shows for details. Also look at the up and coming music concerts we put on at Two Whales. Visit our events calendar listing all events at Two Whales. Try our Event Notifications service – you can sign up to receive an email about upcoming events like music, art, film and our changing hours of business a week or so before the event. No need to miss any of the great things at Two Whales.
